Color Theory

Basic Color Theory

Color properties: HUE, SATURATION, LUMINOSITY (HSL)
HUE- what we see as the color- this is because it reflects certain light wavelengths
SATURATION - the greyscale value or chroma. This has to do with how much color it contains- or how intense it is
LUMINOSITY-the degree of brightness in the image (also called lightness)

VALUE- how much light and dark in the color.  This enhances or reduces contrast.
TONE- how much white in the color.

Color harmonies: Be prepared to name them.
  • Complementary (or contrasting)- the colors opposite each other on a color wheel.
  • Analogous color –colors adjacent on a color wheel. Be prepared to name a couple.

In Photoshop, BLENDS take advantage of this propensity of the additive color system, drawing on the different channels, Red, Green, Blue and Alpha (luminance and darkness) to create different image effects.

TWO DIFFERENT COLOR SYSTEMS; RGB and CMYK
RGB denotes the major colors that are combined to create a photorealistic image- for a screen.
RGB color system is an additive system-  combine three colors together, you will get White.

Print systems use a different system, called CYMK (cyan, yellow, magenta, black).

ALPHA CHANNELS store information about luminance and darkness.
An alpha channel is a fourth greyscale channel that describes the transparence of an image.
